What is an Endoscopy?

What is an Endoscopy?
  • An endoscopy is used to examine a patient’s stomach or colon
  • An endoscope is the instrument used by the doctor for the examination
  • It is a long flexible tube with a camera and a light source attached to it
  • Images of the stomach or colon are then projected onto a screen
If you are scheduled for an endoscopy:
  • You will be given specific instructions on how to prepare for your test
  • For the test, you will be asked to lie on your left side
  • And the endoscope will either be inserted through your mouth (to examine yourstomach) or your anus (to examine your colon)

How to prepare for an examination of the stomach

Gastroscopy

You need to be fasting for at least 6 hours.If your test is scheduled for themorning, you should come to the hospital fasting.If you are having an afternoon test, you can have a light breakfast (only biscuits) at 6am and drink fluids till 7am. You should then remain fasting after 7am.


How to prepare for an examination of the colon

Colonoscopyy

You will need to take a purgative to clean your colon.The purgative most commonly used in Mauritius is Fortrans.It is essential that you take the full preparation to ensure a successful test.Fortrans can be mixed with juice to improve its taste.

The preparation for a colonoscopy is over 2 days:
  • Day prior to your test: From lunch onwards, you should take only light diet (i.e. soup only)
  • Day prior to your test: Start taking 2 litres of fortrans (each sachet of fortrans should be mixed with 1litre of water)
  • Day of your test: 5am: You can drink dark tea or coffee and then start taking another 1 litre of fortrans (3 litres in total)
  • Day of your test: For a morning procedure, you should stay fasting after taking the fortrans
  • Day of your test: For an afternoon procedure, you can drink water or juice till 10 am

What is a polypectomy?

Polypectomy is the removal of polyps during endoscopy (usually a colonoscopy).

Your doctor may use a small device called a snare to catch the polyp and remove it. Occasionally, a small amount of current may be needed for the procedure and you will be asked for remove all jewelry prior to a colonoscopy. Occasionally complications such as bleeding can occur and your doctor should be able to deal with any immediate complications.

  • Polyps are abnormal growths in the colon or more rarely in the stomach
  • Polyps once found, need to be removed as they can become cancerous after a few years
  • Removal of polyps has been shown to decrease significantly mortality associated withcolorectal cancer
